Set up your own Twilio number for SMS in 10 minutes

Connect a real SMS number to Spokk using your own free Twilio account — no technical experience needed. Once connected, Spokk automatically sends feedback requests, review reminders, and referrals to your customers via text.

What you'll need

  • An email address (for your Twilio account)
  • A personal phone number (to verify your Twilio account)
  • About 10 minutes
  • No credit card required for the free trial

Create a free Twilio account

Twilio offers a free trial account with no credit card required. You get trial credits to test everything before spending a cent.

  1. 1Go to twilio.com/try-twilio and fill in your name, email, and password.
  2. 2Verify your email address — check your inbox for a confirmation link.
  3. 3Verify your personal phone number — Twilio will text you a code.
  4. 4Answer a few onboarding questions: choose "SMS" as your product and "Send notifications" as your use case (these don't affect functionality).
  5. 5You're in — you'll land on the Twilio Console dashboard.

These two credentials are your Twilio "username and password" — they're right on the dashboard the moment you log in.

  1. 1Log in to the Twilio Console .
  2. 2Scroll down slightly on the dashboard to the "Account Info" section.
  3. 3Your Account SID is shown there — it starts with AC followed by 32 characters.
  4. 4Your Auth Token is shown just below it, hidden by dots. Click the eye icon to reveal it.
  5. 5Copy both and keep them safe — treat them like a password.

  2. 2Twilio will automatically suggest a number — click "Choose this number" to confirm it.
  3. 3Or, to pick a specific number, go to Buy a Number and search by area code or type.
  4. 4Your active numbers are at Phone Numbers → Manage → Active Numbers .

After saving, Spokk will verify the connection. Once confirmed, your automation flow will start sending SMS requests to your customers automatically.

Free trial limitations

The Twilio free trial is great for testing, but has restrictions that make it unsuitable for messaging real customers. Here's what to know:

Verified recipients only

On a free trial, you can only send SMS to phone numbers you've manually verified in the Twilio console. You'll need to upgrade to message real customers.

"Sent from your Twilio trial account -" prefix

Every message sent from a trial account includes this prefix automatically. Upgrading removes it.

One phone number

Trial accounts are limited to a single Twilio number.

Trial credits (~$15)

You get a small starting balance to test with. SMS messages and number rental are deducted from this balance.

Recommendation: Use the trial to test the connection and verify your own number. When you're ready to send to real customers, upgrade your Twilio account — plans start at around $20/month and include a real dedicated number with no trial restrictions.
