๐Ÿ”— Referral Program

Your regulars already recommend you to friends. Now make it automatic.

Spokk gives every coffee shop customer their own referral code via SMS, 20 days after their visit. When a friend visits and mentions that code, both people get a reward. You get a new regular. And you can track exactly who your best brand ambassadors are.

The referral gap

83% of your happy customers would refer a friend. Less than 30% actually do. Here's why.

Here's the thing about word-of-mouth for coffee shops. It happens all the time. Someone mentions your place at work. Tells a friend about the oat latte. Brings a colleague on a walk. This is organic referral behavior and it's happening around you constantly. You just can't see it, can't track it, and can't amplify it.

The research is pretty clear: 83% of satisfied customers would refer someone if asked. But only about 29% actually do it in any trackable way. The gap between intention and action is explained entirely by one thing: they were never given a mechanism. Nobody gave them a referral code. Nobody said "here's how to bring a friend in and get something for both of you."

Spokk closes that gap. Twenty days after their visit, every customer gets a personal referral code in their pocket. It's easy to share. There's a clear reward for doing it. The behavior they were already doing (telling friends about your shop) now has structure and accountability behind it.

And you finally get to see it. Who's sending the most referrals. How many new regulars came from your existing regulars. Which of your customers is genuinely your best marketer.

How customers actually share their referral code

๐Ÿ“ฑWhatsApp and iMessage to a single friend: "You have to try this place. Use my link and you both get a free pastry."
๐Ÿ“ธInstagram Story: "My favorite coffee shop has a referral thing now. Here's the link for a free drink on your first visit."
๐Ÿ‘ฅOffice group chat or neighborhood Facebook group: "Anyone near [street] should check out [shop name]. Mention my code when you go."
๐Ÿ—ฃIn person: "Come with me tomorrow morning, I have a link that gets us both something."
How it works

The full referral flow from link to new regular.

01
Regular customer gets their referral code
20 days after their visit, an SMS arrives: "Love [Your Shop]? Share your referral code with a friend and you both get [reward]. Your code: [code]."
02
They share their code with a friend
Via WhatsApp, text, Instagram, word of mouth, or however they want. The code is theirs, persistent, and works for any new customer who hasn't visited before.
03
The friend visits and mentions the code at check-in
The friend comes in and mentions the referral code (or the referrer's name or number) at the counter. Staff note it at check-in. Spokk records the referral source.
04
Both customers receive their reward
The referring customer gets their reward SMS: "Your friend just visited! Your free pastry is waiting." The new customer also gets their welcome reward if you set up dual rewards.
05
The new customer enters the automation sequence
From here, the new customer is in Spokk just like everyone else. Feedback SMS, Google review nudge, their own referral code 20 days later. The cycle continues.

The dual reward structure

Single-sided rewards (only the referrer gets something) work. Dual rewards (both the referrer and the new customer get something) work dramatically better.

When the referrer can tell their friend "you get something too," the share rate increases significantly. The social friction of recommending something is lower when it benefits both parties. "I'm not just promoting my favorite coffee shop, I'm getting you a free drink" is a different conversation.

Your unofficial ambassadors

Every coffee shop has 5-10 customers who drive a disproportionate share of referrals. Do you know who they are?

In any healthy local business, a small percentage of customers are responsible for a large share of word-of-mouth. The person who has sent seven friends to your coffee shop. The office manager who told everyone in their building about you. The Instagram micro-influencer who lives on your block and mentions you once a week.

These people exist in your customer base right now. You probably have a vague sense of who some of them are. But you don't have data. You can't see the number. You can't formally recognize them. You can't offer them a premium thank-you that's proportional to the value they've driven.

Spokk's referral dashboard shows you exactly who referred who. You can pull up a ranked list of your top referrers, see their referral count, and identify the customers who are functionally your marketing team.

What you do with that information is up to you. A personal note. A surprise upgrade. An invitation to a members event. A gift card. Whatever fits your brand. But knowing who they are is the starting point for treating your best advocates the way they deserve.

The referral dashboard shows you:

โœ“Total referrals per customer (ranked leaderboard)
โœ“Which new customers came from which referral code
โœ“Total referral-driven visits by month
โœ“Which referrers are still active vs dormant
โœ“Average visit count of referred customers vs non-referred
โœ“Which time periods drove the most referral activity

FAQ

Common questions about referral programs for coffee shops

How does the Spokk referral program work for a coffee shop?

Twenty days after a customer's visit, Spokk automatically sends them their unique personal referral code via SMS. When a friend visits your coffee shop and mentions that code at check-in, the referring customer receives a reward SMS. You define what the reward is. Dual rewards are supported so the new customer can also receive something for their first visit.

Why 20 days after the visit?

Twenty days is enough time for the customer to have had multiple positive experiences and formed a genuine opinion about your shop. Sending the referral code too early (e.g., after their first visit) means they're still deciding if they like you. After 20 days, they've had enough visits to feel confident recommending you to a friend.

Can I change the timing of when the referral SMS is sent?

Yes. The 20-day default is fully customizable in your Spokk flow builder. You can change the delay, the message text, and whether the step is active. Some coffee shops set it at 14 days for high-frequency markets, others at 30 days to target only their proven regulars.

What kind of reward can I offer for referrals?

Anything that makes sense for your business. Popular options: a free drink, a discount on the next visit, a free pastry, or loyalty visit credits. You write the reward message yourself in Spokk. Dual rewards are also supported, so both the referrer and the new customer get something.

How does Spokk track that a referral was successful?

When the referred person mentions the referral code at check-in, Spokk records the referral as complete and triggers the reward SMS to the referring customer. The referral dashboard shows who referred who, how many successful referrals each customer has made, and total referral-driven visits.

Can I see which customers are driving the most referrals?

Yes. Your Spokk referral dashboard shows a ranked list of your biggest referrers. You can identify your unofficial brand ambassadors and, if you want, give them extra recognition or a premium reward for being your top advocates.

Does the referral program integrate with the loyalty program?

Yes. Referral-driven check-ins count toward the new customer's visit loyalty count. The referring customer can also receive loyalty visit credits as part of their reward, depending on how you configure it.

What if a customer already referred several friends? Do they keep getting the referral SMS?

The referral SMS is sent once per automation cycle, determined by the cooldown setting. If a customer's cooldown resets after 30 days and they check in again, they may receive another referral SMS in that new cycle. The unique referral code is persistent, so sharing it again is always possible.

How does word-of-mouth referral compare to paid advertising for coffee shops?

Referrals convert at much higher rates than paid ads because trust is already built. Someone who hears about your coffee shop from a friend they trust is pre-sold before they walk in. They're also more likely to become regulars themselves because the recommendation came with social endorsement. Referral customers typically have 16% higher lifetime value than non-referred customers.

Is the referral program TCPA compliant?

Yes. The referral SMS is part of the automation sequence that customers entered by checking in and providing their phone number. Every message includes a STOP opt-out option. Opted-out customers are never messaged again.
