Choosing an attorney involves more trust than almost any other professional decision. Testimonials reduce that friction.

Think about what a prospective client is actually feeling when they are searching for a lawyer. They are usually dealing with something stressful, personal, and high-stakes. A business dispute that could cost them everything. A custody situation involving their children. An estate matter following a death. They are not just looking for competent. They are looking for someone they can trust with something that matters.

And yet most law firm websites are a gallery of headshots and credential lists. Which is helpful. But it does not answer the question the prospective client is really asking: “What is it actually like to work with this firm? Will I feel heard? Will they explain things clearly? Will they call me back?”

A real client, on video, answering exactly those questions is the most powerful marketing asset most law firms are not using. Not because they do not want testimonials. Because collecting them feels awkward, time-consuming, and like just another thing to manage.

Spokk removes all of that. The request goes out automatically as part of the post-matter SMS sequence. The client records or writes in their phone browser, no app needed. You review and approve before anything gets published. The whole collection process takes zero additional time from your team.

🎬

Video testimonials

30-90 seconds recorded directly in the phone browser. Authentic, emotionally compelling, and virtually impossible to dismiss as fabricated. Best for website hero sections, practice area pages, and YouTube.

✍️

Text testimonials

Written testimonials that clients complete in the same browser-based interface. Versatile for pull quotes, print materials, Google Business Profile, and email. Fast to collect and easy to use.

Rated testimonials

Combine a star rating with a written or video testimonial for a format that is useful across multiple contexts. The rating gives you structured data while the testimonial gives you the story.

How Spokk collects testimonials for your law firm.

The workflow is designed to be zero effort on your part and minimal effort on the client's part. Here is exactly what happens.

1

Create a testimonial link in Spokk

Takes 2 minutes. Configure whether you want video, text, or both. Add an optional intro message that prompts the client on what to talk about. Add a star rating field if you want it.

2

Add the testimonial step to your automation sequence

In Spokk's flow builder, add a 'Send Testimonial Request' step at the timing that makes sense for your firm. Many law firms trigger it 7-10 days after matter close, after the feedback and review steps have already run.

3

Client receives SMS with their personal testimonial link

The link opens a mobile page in their browser. The page is clean, simple, and guides them through recording a video or writing a testimonial. No app download. No login required.

4

Client records video or writes text

Video recording uses their phone camera directly from the browser. The quality is typically good enough for website use. Text submission is a simple form. The whole process takes under 3 minutes.

5

Testimonial appears in your dashboard for review

You see every submission in your Spokk dashboard. Read or watch before approving. Reject anything you do not want to use. Once approved, testimonials are available to download, embed, or share.

6

Use it everywhere

Embed video on your website using Spokk's embed code. Download video files for YouTube or social media. Copy text testimonials for print materials or email campaigns. The content is yours.

What attorney advertising rules actually say about testimonials. It is worth knowing precisely.

Bar advertising rules on testimonials are more nuanced than a simple yes or no, and they vary significantly by state. Here is the framework that most attorneys need to understand.

Truthfulness requirement

The ABA Model Rule 7.1 prohibits communications about a lawyer's services that are false or misleading. This means testimonials must accurately reflect the client's actual experience. They cannot include fabricated quotes, exaggerated claims, or statements the client did not make.

Results disclaimers

Some states (California, New York, others) require a disclaimer when a testimonial could imply that a specific outcome is likely in a future case. Something like: 'Past results do not guarantee similar outcomes.' The ABA Model Rules do not require this, but your state bar might.

Confidentiality

Testimonials must not disclose confidential information about the client's matter without their consent. In practice, this means testimonials should describe the experience of working with the firm (communication, process, how they felt), not the legal strategy or specific case details.

Client consent

The client must actually consent to their testimonial being used in your marketing. Spokk's testimonial form includes a submission that indicates the client is voluntarily providing their review for potential use. You still need clear written consent for identified testimonials, particularly video.

Practical approach: Focus testimonials on client experience, not results. Include appropriate state-required disclaimers. Get explicit written consent for any identified testimonials. Review your state bar's advertising rules, particularly if you are in California, New York, Florida, or Texas. The ABA Model Rule 7.1 commentary is a useful reference.

Frequently asked questions about client testimonials for law firms

How does Spokk collect client testimonials for law firms?+
Spokk adds a testimonial request step to your SMS automation sequence. When triggered, the client receives a link to a mobile-optimized testimonial page where they can record a short video or write a text testimonial directly in their phone browser. No app download required. Completed testimonials appear in your Spokk dashboard, ready to download or embed.
Are client testimonials allowed under attorney advertising rules?+
Generally yes, with important caveats. Most state bar advertising rules permit client testimonials as long as they are truthful and do not create false impressions about likely outcomes. Some states require specific disclaimers when testimonials imply a particular result. Always review your specific state bar's advertising rules. The ABA Model Rule 7.1 prohibits false or misleading communications but does not prohibit truthful client testimonials.
Should law firms use video or text testimonials?+
Both have value. Video testimonials are more emotionally compelling and harder to dismiss as fabricated. They perform exceptionally well on websites and social media. Text testimonials are easier to obtain, faster to review and approve, and more versatile for print materials, email, and quotes pages. Most firms benefit from building a library of both.
What should clients say in a law firm testimonial?+
The most effective law firm testimonials focus on the client's experience of working with the firm: communication quality, how well the process was explained, how supported they felt, and the outcome of their matter (framed as their specific experience, not as a promise of results). Testimonials that mention specific attorneys or paralegals by name tend to be more trusted and more effective.
Can Spokk prevent asking the same client for a testimonial twice?+
Yes. Spokk has smart deduplication: it tracks who has already submitted a testimonial and will not ask them again. This prevents annoying repeat requests to clients who already contributed.
How does Spokk handle client confidentiality in testimonials?+
The testimonial request and the resulting content are entirely controlled by the client. They choose what to share. The Spokk testimonial form can include a consent acknowledgment noting that the testimonial may be used in marketing materials. You review every testimonial before using it. If a client inadvertently shares something sensitive, you simply do not publish that testimonial.
Where can law firms use client testimonials collected by Spokk?+
Website (practice area pages, homepage, about page), Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and other social media, email newsletter campaigns, print brochures and materials, intake packets, pitch presentations for referral sources, and Google review content (with the client's permission to use their words). Video testimonials are especially powerful on website landing pages and YouTube.
What if a testimonial contains misleading claims about outcomes?+
You review every testimonial in your Spokk dashboard before it appears anywhere publicly. You have full control over which testimonials you publish or use. If a testimonial makes outcome claims that could be misleading under your state bar's rules, simply do not use it. The review process is built into the workflow.
Can I ask specific clients for testimonials, not just recent visitors?+
Yes. You can manually trigger a testimonial request for any client in your Spokk contact list, not just those who recently checked in. This lets you reach out to long-term loyal clients, notable success stories, or clients from specific practice areas where you want to build testimonial depth.
How long should a law firm client testimonial be?+
Video testimonials should ideally be 30-90 seconds. Longer than that and most viewers drop off before the end. Text testimonials can range from 2-3 sentences for a short pull-quote to 3-5 paragraphs for a detailed case study format. Spokk's testimonial form lets you set guidance prompts that help clients write or speak in the format that is most useful to you.
