🤝 Referral Program

Your happiest members are your best salespeople. Give them a code.

Spokk automatically sends every member their unique referral code 20 days after check-in, when enthusiasm is high and habits are forming. When a friend signs up and mentions the code, both get rewarded. You get a new member at a fraction of the cost of any paid channel.

Why this works

Gym membership is one of the most referral-friendly purchases in the world. Most gyms never capitalize on that.

Think about what happens when someone starts going to a gym regularly and sees results. They get asked about it. Friends notice. “You look different lately, what are you doing?” happens at work, at family dinners, on social media. The gym member becomes a walking ad for their gym, whether they intend to or not.

The problem is that most gyms never take advantage of that moment. There is no mechanism to convert that enthusiasm into an actual sign-up. The member says “oh I go to Iron Peak, you should check it out,” and the friend might Google it later, or might not. No link is shared. No reward is offered. The conversion rate on that interaction is probably 5%.

Add a structured referral program and that dynamic changes completely. The member has a code. Mentioning the code gets the friend a tangible reward when they sign up. The referring member gets a reward too. Now the conversation turns into an action. Instead of “you should check it out,” it is “mention my code when you sign up and you get a free first month.” That converts.

And there is a retention angle to this that is often overlooked. Research from the Wharton School shows that referred members have significantly higher retention rates than those who joined through other channels. Part of this is selection: people only refer gyms to friends they genuinely think will like it. Part of it is the built-in social bond: the referred member and the referring member are now gym friends, and social accountability is one of the strongest drivers of gym habit formation.

How it works

From member check-in to referral conversion: the full flow.

1
Member checks in via QR code
Every check-in starts the automation sequence. Twenty days from this moment, the referral invite step fires.
2
Referral SMS arrives at day 20
'Marcus, you have been crushing it at Iron Peak! Know someone who should join? Share your code and you both get a reward: [unique code]'
3
Member shares their code
Via text, WhatsApp, social media, or word of mouth. The code is unique to them so every conversion is tracked back to this member.
4
Friend mentions the code when signing up
The friend mentions Marcus's referral code (or Marcus's name or number) at check-in. The sign-up is attributed to Marcus in Spokk. Both the referrer reward and the new member reward are triggered.
5
Both receive SMS reward notifications
'Marcus, your friend just joined! Your free month has been added to your account.' And the friend: 'Welcome to Iron Peak! Your first month is on Marcus.'
6
Conversion tracked in your dashboard
Referral attributed to Marcus. Total referral-driven sign-ups visible across your member base. Who referred who, when, and which rewards were triggered.
What you configure
Referrer reward
What the referring member receives when their friend signs up. Write the reward description in plain text.
New member reward
What the referred friend receives when they sign up using the link. Can be the same or different from the referrer reward.
Referral SMS message
The exact wording of the 20-day referral invite. Uses {{name}}, {{company}}, and {{code}} variables.
Timing
Change the referral step from 20 days to any other timing that fits your member cycle.
Dual reward structure

The referring member and the new member can both receive a reward. This is more effective than one-sided referral programs because both parties have an incentive to complete the referral.

Reward design

The right referral reward feels like a gift. The wrong one feels like a coupon.

Here is a distinction worth making. A 10% discount on next month's membership for referring a friend is technically a reward. But it does not feel like one. It feels transactional. It makes the act of referring your gym feel like a coupon exchange rather than a genuine recommendation.

Compare that to: “Get your friend a free first month, and we will give you a free personal training session.” That feels like a gift on both sides. The referrer is giving something valuable to their friend. They are receiving something they actually want. The act of sharing the referral code feels generous, not transactional.

The best referral rewards for gyms tend to be experiences or services rather than discounts. A free PT session. A free nutrition consultation. A guest pass pack. These have high perceived value and they introduce the referred member to services they might otherwise not try, which actually increases their engagement and retention.

For the new member reward, think about what makes someone actually commit to signing up. A free first month eliminates the risk of the first commitment. A free starter PT session ensures they learn how to use the gym properly, which dramatically improves their first-90-days retention. Either is worth offering.

High-performing referrer reward

Should feel like a genuine thank-you, not a discount.
High-performing new member reward

Should reduce the friction of the first commitment and set up long-term success.

FAQ

Questions about gym referral programs

How does Spokk's gym referral program work?
Every member in Spokk gets their own unique referral code. By default, Spokk sends this code via SMS 20 days after a member's check-in, which is when engaged members are at peak enthusiasm. When someone signs up and mentions that code, the referring member receives an SMS reward notification with the reward you configured. Both the referrer and the new member can receive rewards.
Why 20 days? Why not immediately after a visit?
Twenty days is deliberate. Members who have been coming for a few weeks have settled into a routine and feel confident about the gym. They have seen enough to genuinely recommend it, but the enthusiasm of the early weeks is still high. It is also long enough after the check-in that the referral invite does not feel like an immediate sales ask.
What rewards can I offer for gym referrals?
You configure both the referrer reward and the new member reward in Spokk. Common gym referral rewards include: free months, free PT sessions, gym merchandise, class credits, account credit toward membership fees, or reduced rates. Both rewards are described in the SMS messages and landing pages — you write the reward description in plain text.
How does Spokk track which new sign-ups came from a referral?
Each member has a unique referral code. When someone signs up and mentions that specific code, it is attributed to the referring member in Spokk's tracking dashboard. You can see who referred who, how many referrals each member has generated, and total referral-driven new sign-ups over any time period.
Can a member share their referral code on social media?
Yes. Members can share their referral code anywhere: text message, WhatsApp, Instagram DM, Facebook, or by passing it along by word of mouth. Members who are enthusiastic about your gym often share it organically across their networks once they have the code.
What if a member has already received their referral SMS — will they get it again on their next visit?
The automation sequence uses a feedback cooldown setting that you configure. If a member checks in again within the cooldown period (for example, within 14 days), the sequence does not trigger again. Once the cooldown expires, their next check-in starts a new sequence, which includes the referral invite step 20 days later. You can adjust this behavior in your automation settings.
Do referred members have a higher lifetime value than regular sign-ups?
Research consistently shows this. A study published by the Wharton School found that referred customers tend to have higher retention rates than those who joined through other channels. For gyms specifically, referred members often join with a built-in social accountability partner — the friend who referred them — which increases their visit frequency and renewal likelihood.
Can I run the referral program manually without waiting for the automation sequence?
Yes. Staff can send a referral code to any member manually at any time from the Spokk dashboard. This is useful for targeted referral pushes, like asking your top 20 most loyal members to refer a friend during a slow month.
How do I know when a referred member actually joins?
When someone mentions a referral code at check-in, that event is logged in Spokk and the referring member receives an SMS notification. The conversion also appears in your referral dashboard with the date, the referring member, and the new contact created. How you then actually complete the sign-up process for that new member depends on your gym's normal enrollment workflow.
Does the referral program work for multi-location gym groups?
Yes. Referral tracking is per location. A member at one of your locations gets a referral code for that specific location. Referral conversions are tracked and reported per location in your Spokk dashboard. You manage all locations from one account.
What is the best way to communicate the referral program to members?
The automated SMS is the primary channel, but you can reinforce it with in-gym signage, mentions in your loyalty milestone messages ('Earned your 10-visit reward! Also, refer a friend and get a free month'), and in any email newsletter you send. Members who understand the reward structure are more likely to share proactively even before their 20-day SMS arrives.
